The Ten Commandments that, as a teacher, I should wish to promulgate, might be set forth as follows

Decálogo Liberal – Os Dez Mandamentos que promulgaria, como professor

1. Do not feel absolutely certain of anything.
1. Não te sentirás absolutamente certo de coisa alguma.

2. Do not think it worth while to proceed by concealing evidence, for the evidence is sure to come to light.
2. Não pensarás ser vantajoso progredir ocultando as evidências pois elas virão, inapelavelmente, à luz .

3. Never try to discourage thinking for you are sure to succeed.
3. Não tentarás desencorajar o raciocínio, pois seguramente conseguirás.

4. When you meet with opposition, even if it should be from your husband or your children, endeavor to overcome it by argument and not by authority, for a victory dependent upon authority is unreal and illusory.
4. Quando encontrares oposição, mesmo que seja a de marido ou filhos, esforçar-te-ás por superá-la pela força dos argumentos e não pela da autoridade, pois uma vitória que depende da autoridade é irreal e ilusória.

5. Have no respect for the authority of others, for there are always contrary authorities to be found.
5. Não respeitarás a autoridade de outros, pois encontrar-te-ás com autoridades contraditórias.

6. Do not use power to suppress opinions you think pernicious, for if you do the opinions will suppress you.
6. Não usarás o poder para suprimir opiniões que julgas perniciosas, pois se o fizeres as opiniões suprimir-te-ão.

7. Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric.
7. Não temerás ser excêntrico nas tuas opiniões pois toda e qualquer opinião hoje aceite já foi outrora excêntrica.

8. Find more pleasure in intelligent dissent that in passive agreement, for, if you value intelligence as you should, the former implies a deeper agreement than the latter.
8. Encontrarás mais prazer na divergência inteligente do que na concordância passiva visto que, se apreciares devidamente a inteligência, a primeira implica um acordo mais profundo do que a segunda.

9. Be scrupulously truthful, even if the truth is inconvenient, for it is more inconvenient when you try to conceal it.

9. Serás escrupulosamente verdadeiro, mesmo que a verdade seja inconveniente, pois mais inconveniente será quando tentares ocultá-la.

10. Do not feel envious of the happiness of those who live in a fool’s paradise, for only a fool will think that it is happiness.
10. Não sentirás inveja da felicidade daqueles que vivem num paraíso de insensatos, pois somente um insensato pensará que isso é felicidade.
